Symposium on Catholic Urban Education Models

The Archdiocese of Indianapolis and Mother Theodore Catholic Academies, Indianapolis, will sponsor a Symposium on Catholic Urban Education Models on the last day of the annual National Catholic Educational Convention, March 28, 2008, at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. Many different models are being tried today around the country to meet the growing challenges of Catholic education in urban areas. The Archdiocese of Indianapolis operates six center-city schools in Indianapolis as a consortium – The Mother Theodore Catholic Academies – named after Indiana’s first saint, Mother Theodore Guerin, now Saint Theodora. The symposium will explore the Mother Theodore Catholic Academies program as well as other education models serving urban populations with two keynote speakers and breakout sessions.

The sponsors are pleased to announce that Father Ron Nuzzi, PhD, has agreed to serve as keynote speaker for the symposium. Father Nuzzi is Director of Catholic Leadership Programs in the Alliance for the Catholic Education (ACE) Program at the University of Notre Dame. A nationally known speaker and author, he has written extensively about the multiple intelligence theory in Catholic education, the spirituality of leadership, and inclusion in Catholic schools. He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, and masters degrees in theology, philosophy, and education. From 1992 until 2000, he taught at The University of Dayton, and was instrumental in establishing its Center for Catholic Education and Lalanne teacher service program that serves urban Catholic schools around the country. From 2000-2002, he was director of the Catholic Leadership Program at Saint Louis University, and since June 2002, it has been his privilege to call Notre Dame home.

We are also very pleased to announce Fr. Joseph M. O’Keefe, S.J. has agreed to be our afternoon symposium keynote speaker.  Joseph M. O'Keefe, S.J. is Dean of the Lynch School of Education at Boston College.  He has published widely on issues related to Catholic education, particularly in the area of urban Catholic schools.  In 2004, he co-authored Sustaining the Legacy: Inner-city Catholic Elementary Schools in the United States which was published by NCEA. He received his undergraduate education from the College of the Holy Cross, a Master's in French from Fordham University, and an M.Div. and S.T.L. from Weston Jesuit School of Theology.  He received his doctorate in education from Harvard University.  Father O'Keefe works closely with the National Catholic Educational Association and served as the director of the National Center for Research in Catholic Education.

Registration for a full day program, including breakfast and lunch as well as educational information of different Catholic urban school models is $125 per person.
